When we go outside in the sun, we all know that we are told that we need to protect our eyes.  The quick solution is to put on a pair of sunglasses.

The sun is something that can damage our eyes very quickly without us even noticing it is happening.  The strength of the sun’s rays are stronger now than they have ever been.

That means that if we need to be sure our eyes are protected when absolutely must do the same for our dogs.   Let’s look at why and what kind of eye wear we should be buying.

Why should some dogs wear eye wear?

Why is it important for our dogs to wear eyewear protection.  Dogs live a much shorter life span and because of that, they generally don’t have to worry too much about UV protection from the sun.

Now that being said, there are some dogs, that UV protection is very important.  A dog that has health issues with their eyes.  Things like Pannus which is an autoimmune disease that can lead to dog blindness caused by an over exposure to UV rays.  Your choices at this point, is to limit your dog from going outside, or by purchasing proper eyewear protection, so your dog doesn’t have to miss out on the great outdoors.

Even a blind dog could potential be at risk of an eye injury.  Having protective eyewear can help if they bump into something while moving about.

Certain breeds of dogs, are also susceptible to having very sensitive eyes.  Short nosed dog breeds that are called Brachycephalic breeds are dogs like: Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, and Shih Tzus.

These dogs have large eyes that tend to bulge out.  Their size is also something that plays a part just simply because they are dogs that are low to the ground, this can leave them open to injuries from trees, shrubs and brush poking into their eyes.

Protection

There are many choices when it comes to what type of eyewear to purchase for your dog.  Some options take protection into account and some are strictly for fashion sense.  Protecting your dogs eyes, is a great reason to buy dog eyewear for your pup.

When our dogs go outside in the elements, their eyes can be subjected to many irritants.  Outdoor conditions like wind, debris, and the sun are some real issues that can affect their eyes.

Many dogs love to stick their heads out the car window on a road trip.  Have you ever stuck your head out the window going 80 km/hr, well it doesn’t feel that great on your eyes.  When you watch a dog with their head out you can see that it can dry out their eyes.  By putting doggy eyewear on them, you can help them enjoy the wind storm and not worry about irritating their eyes.

There are some other great reasons to protect your dogs eyes.  Dogs that are hunting dogs for example are at risk of potentially damaging their eyes from trees and bushes poking them in the eye.   Many dogs are dogs that have jobs like search and rescue dogs, police dogs and of course military dogs.

Working dogs like military dogs, are at great risk of becoming injured.   Their eyes of course are something that absolutely need to be protected.  These dogs are subjected to the worst scenarios, just like our soldiers.  Keeping their eyes protected is a must for them to continue to be an active military dog.

Sunglasses

We have all seen pictures of dogs that have sunglasses on.  Now this is adorable and so cute, but normally these are human sunglasses.  This is okay for short term pics and cuteness, but not for any type of dog eyewear protection.

For protection, you want to buy specific dog sunglasses that have straps, that help keep them securely fastened on their head.  When fitting them properly,  you want to make sure the cup depth of the glasses will accommodate your dogs face.  If your dog is a dog with bulging eyes, make sure they are deep enough to fit their face.

When it comes to styles and choices anything goes.  Some styles look like sunglasses with straps and a normal lens size.  But if you are looking for something a bit different, than there are also sunglasses that have much larger lenses and are more oval shaped.

dog pink glasses

Just like in choosing our own sunglasses, not every set of glasses fits everyone the same.   Things like the shape of our face and bridge of our nose, play a part in finding the right fit.   The same goes for dogs, in order for your dog to feel comfortable wearing them, they must fit good. The great thing about the sunglasses with straps, is that you can adjust the tightness around your dogs face.   That way they will stay securely in place if your dog is active and is wearing them for eye protection.

Now in saying protection is important let’s not forget that fashion is also something that dog owners today find important.  The way dogs are treated now is completely different than years ago.  Dogs are much more included as a member of the family.  With that change has brought dog fashion to the forefront in the way of clothes, coats, boots, accessories and of course dog sunglasses.

Not all dog sunglasses as I’ve said are for protection, the fashion glasses that are available for dogs now is amazing.  Your dog can be dressed up to be that cool sporty dog we all love.  The style of glasses come in an array of different colors and styles to choose from.

With these glasses, they are a little less likely to wear them long term.  Depending on your dog and how they adapt to wearing them, it’s a must to snap as many photos as you can.  The overall cuteness factor is off the charts.

Kailian Dog Goggles

Goggles

Dog goggles have become super popular for dogs in the past 10 years or so.  They have even gone so far as to create something called doggles.  This just goes to show how common dog goggles are today and how many dog owners are buying goggles for their dogs.

The main difference between a pair of sunglasses versus goggles is generally the design of them.  Goggles have a much bigger lens area and even go as far to have 2 lenses separated by a middle piece.  A goggle is generally one full large lens with no middle separator.  Very much like a snow style goggle that we would wear.

They are usually curved at the bottom to go around the bridge of the nose.  The nice thing about some styles of goggles is air circulation holes within the goggles help circulate the air around your dogs eyes.

Soft straps and padding under the lens are all things that really make a good set of dog goggles comfortable for your dog to wear.  Once your dog gets comfortable wearing them, you are set to go on your next adventure.

To shade or not to shade

When it comes to our dogs eyes the question whether we shade our dogs eyes in protection or shade them for style, there is a dog eyewear product for that.

A huge effort has been put into sleek designs, comfort, and great eye protection.  The best lenses are made shatterproof with UV protection from the sun.  Almost all glasses and goggles with straps have an incorporated extra chin strap that can be adjusted for a nice tight fit.

DOGGLES!

Having interchangeable lenses from UV shading to clear is also a pretty cool way to get the best of both worlds for your dog.  On a shady day outside, you may want them to still have eye wear protection, but don’t need the UV protection.  Easily swapping out the lenses gives you the option of both choices.

Including our dog in our excursions and adventures is a much more common thing these days.  Seeing a dog on the back of a motorbike rocking their own cool sunglasses or goggles isn’t even that rare anymore.  Whether you are riding your bike, driving your car, hunting, hiking or anything else, remember that your dog has equipment needs just like we do.

In my job, we call this PPE (personal protective equipment).  Everyone is required to protect themselves by wearing all the appropriate gear that is required.  That means including YOUR DOG!!

  1. Hello Coralie, my dog is one that loves running around in the field a lot and I see having eye protection on for her would saves all so much trouble and even regrets. The eyes are a very essential part of the existence of both humans and animals, so I don’t see a reason why anyone would want to to the chances of risking the sight of their buddy. I’ll look up some sunglasses for my dog and get her some. Best regards .

  3. Thank you for your post. It is a timely article for me. My dog’s eyes are always red, esp after staying outside for a while. I don’t know the reasons.

Here comes you article. May be my dog is sensitive to sunlight. I am going to send my dog to his doctor for a test to see what is wrong with his eyes. Meanwhile, It is worthwhile to purchase eye-wear to protect his eyes for now.

It is kind of sharing this helpful information with us. I always wear sun-light protected eye glasses whenever I go out, but forget that my dear dog also has eyes and need to be protected. I wish that the dog sunglasses are not too expensive. My budget is about $50, which should be fine to buy one for my dog.

    • Hi Anthony,

Thank you so much for sharing your dogs story with me.  Your dog could have allergies to certain things outside, so it is a good thing that you are taking him to the Vet.  They will hopefully have some answers for you.

Many dogs have sensitivity to the sun and require eye wear protection. The best thing about eye wear for your dog, is you don’t have to spend even $50.  You can get some great goggles or sunglasses for under $30 CDN.

Best of luck with your dog.

  4. Hello Coralie,

Thank you for this informative (and personally shaming) post.  I say shaming because I never considered eye protection for any of my dogs.  I just assumed it was mainly for the motorcycle riding types.

I could see use cases for my dogs at times.  I think doggles would be the best option in my case, especially for my Jack Russell, who thinks everything should be torn off and chewed up.

Is there a particular brand or model your recommend for a small breed like my Jack Russell?  Also, how about one for my Border Collie?

    Thanks again,

         Scott

    • Hello Scott,

I am glad that you enjoyed reading my post on dog eye wear protection.  From the feedback I am getting, you aren’t the only one that wasn’t aware of how important it is.

For your Jack Russell, I would definitely recommend the smaller size of Doggles. They are easily adjustable and have the chin strap which will help keep them secure.

Your Border Collie made do better with the wider style that are more square like. That way their is more area that is protected for their larger heads. Check it out here!

I hope that answers all your questions. Thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it.

  5. I have never thought that dogs need eye wear for eye protection. I have always assumed they have been for fashion purposes only. From all the possible risks out there, I regret that I have been this ignorant. It is good that you have specified the need for dog eye-wear, different from human eye wear. I just love how cute the dogs look in sun glasses. Thank you for these insights.
