Sometimes us dog owners can’t take our dog outside for a walk because of bad weather, or in my case being laid up for 4 mos. With an ankle injury. Which of course meant no walking for me or my dog.

To solve this problem, I put my dog on a treadmill to make sure he still gets the exercise that he needs.

Now for us, we started putting our dog on a treadmill when he was under a year old. This made it easier to train him to go on the treadmill regularly. Teaching a dog early allows them to grasp the activity much easier.

Dogs have a great way of remembering things that they were taught when they were puppies. You can avoid doing a specific thing with them for years and when you go back to it, they instantly remember how to do it.

I live in Canada and here well, we can get some pretty nasty winter weather. This means taking your dog out for a walk isn’t always an option everyday.  For us, we decided to start looking at different activities that we could do inside to ensure our dog is getting some exercise.  The treadmill was and is a great way to do that.

I have recently come across this great treadmill made my a company called GoPet. This company offers a different way to think about exercising your dog.

GoPet the company

This company has been in business since 2006. The companies focus is to provide healthy choices for animal exercise. Veterinarians and dog trainers use this for fitness, but also for dog training and rehabilitation.

The first commercial models were rolled out in 2008 and the company continues to expand throughout North America and Overseas.

Currently they have quite a few different products to choose from that they have developed over the years.

This is an American company based out of Pennsylvania.

They have also partnered with Canine Assisted Therapy and Dr. Jill Goldman who does dog obedience training to help give dogs in need assistance.

I always love when companies help out and partner with companies and people that are doing positive things for dogs.

Why use a dog treadmill

Professional treadmills like the one’s made by GoPet, are made for your active dog. They can be used as a replacement for outside walks or as an extra way to really burn that excess energy off.

Some dogs have an abundance of energy, that one walk a day just won’t do. Whether it’s dogs that are puppies or dogs that have behavior problems they can really do well exercising on a treadmill.

Running on a treadmill will provide a very safe environment for your pet to run, without any distractions.   It really helps dogs focus on their task. The mental stimulation paired with the physical exertion, can really tire your dog out . Your dog will sleep better and once you get a routine going using the treadmill regularly, it will also assist if you have a dog that is a bit overweight.

Keeping your dogs weight at a good point, will help keep them healthy.  A dog that is overweight can have health issues and as they get older it can cause serious problems.  Sadly it can even shorten your dogs life.

I know we all love to spoil our dogs, but we need to be careful not to make ourselves happy by feeding them treats all the time. Having a pet that is overweight always comes back to the owner and over feeding.

Exercise, exercise is the key to any bad food habits.  At least exercise will really help them keep excess weight off.

Making sure our dogs live their longest and best life, is the job of every dog owner. Using a treadmill gives our dogs an extra chance of really staying healthy.

A great thing is that your dog doesn’t need to be on the treadmill for hours and hours to really get the

Treadmill features

These treadmills are made with our dogs best interest in mind.  The way they are designed really shows that they have made sure to keep dogs in the forefront of their design.  Simple things make a huge difference.

All models of these treadmills have a silent driving system for a quiet operation, a safety locking system and they all come with a wireless remote control.

They are completely fold able for easy storage.  Equipped with low running platforms allow for easy access for your dog to climb onto.

The treadmills come with a 1-year product warranty.

One of the best features is the dolly wheels that are built into to the treadmill, make it super easy to maneuver around in your home.

Both the folding aspect and the dolly wheels ensure that whenever you need to hide it somewhere it’s super easy. Flexibility is always important when you have exercise equipment for yourself or your dog.  Space is always an issue in any home, so this really helps with that problem.

Different models

There are quite a few different models to choose from when looking at purchasing a dog treadmill.  The most important factor in deciding which treadmill will best suit your dog is your dogs weight.  Each model is designed to hold a pet of a certain weight.

The various models are:

PR700 – is for the toy breed of dogs up to (45 lbs)

PR710 – is for small dogs (88-90 lbs)

PR720 – is for small to medium dogs (130 lbs)

PR725 – is for large breed dogs (176 lbs)

PR730 – is for giant dogs (264 lbs)

All models come with a 1 HP motor and a gradual speed increase. You can either adjust the speed using the remote control or by using the buttons on the treadmill. Slowly working up from a slow walking pace to the desired speed or a run will take some time.

Just as an added bonus, each treadmill comes equipped with a metal eyelid so you can easily attach their favourite toy to help encourage and keep motivating your dog to keep moving.  Dogs are just like people, we sometimes need that extra push to keep going, this feature gives that little extra that might be needed.

Treadmill or not

Deciding whether or not to buy your dog a treadmill, is a tough decision.

The most important thing to think about is whether your dog is getting all the exercise that they need to stay fit and healthy.

If you are struggling with a disobedient dog or a dog that is high-strung, it can be a real battle to deal with.

When we exercise our dogs by a walk outside or inside on a treadmill, a real emotional bond develops between us and our dog. That bond is undeniable and unbreakable. This is a bond unlike any other.

If your dog get distracted on walks and has a hard time focusing.  Then the GoPet treadmill is the answer.

Whether it is being laid up from a surgery, in the mist of a winter storm, or just wanting to squeak in another exercise activity for your dog, getting your dog on the move is the right thing to do.

Sometimes a distracted walk with the traffic, people around or other dogs out and about can really not give your dog the full exercise regiment needed to drain that energy.

I really hope you enjoyed my review of GoPet. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments below.

  1. Wow, what a great idea!   I didn’t even know that they made dog treadmills.  I have two dogs and one does not get much exercise, I think because he is getting up there in years.  The other one gets him to play and run around.  But. I would feel lost without my dog walks.  I walk them a couple times a day for at least a half an hour each.  This is on top of them getting out in the yard and wondering around.  Do you think my two boys are getting enough exercise this way?

    • Hi Matt’s Mom,

Thank you so much for your comments. Sounds to me like your dogs seem to be getting a fair amount of exercise with what your routine is. With your older dog, it is good that you are still providing exercise for them. Having another dog around is always a great way to force the two of them to get exercise together.

My boys are the same way they like to egg each other on, until one of them finally jumps on the other and they decide to play.

Hope I have helped answer your question and thanks again.

  2. Dog treadmills are something I honestly haven’t heard of so I was pleasantly surprised to come across your post here. A doggy treadmill sounds like a great idea, especially if the weather is bad or we can’t make it out for a walk. One question that came to mind before I started reading was if these are safe for dogs so that they don’t go flying off the back if they stop. So I’m glad to read that a lot of safety thought has been put into these products. I’m going to forward your post to a few dog owners that I think will appreciate it as much as I do, great post!

    • Hi Pentrental,

I am glad that you found my post new and interesting. My goal is to help dog owners with all things they can use to help with exercising and raising their dogs.

This treadmill does start at a very slow pace, so that your dog can get used to the speed and not fly off the back.  Training your dog on this is very easy and just takes a few times at a slow speed to get them used to it.

I really appreciate your comments about my post. Thank you.

  3. Hi Coralie

I know people who use go pet and love the product they have

They have a very energetic border collie and she loves going for a run on the treadmill although because of her breed she also needs a lot of external stimulation to keep her mind busy so an obstacle course is what she favours big time.

Have you any links to videos on the treadmill as I would love to see them in action

    • Hi Vicki,

Wow that is excellent, that people you know are using this product and like it. That’s good to hear.  Some dogs can literally go forever. It is kind of amazing. Border Collies are used to having a job, so that makes total sense.

I have since added a short video now, thank your for the tip. I appreciate your positive feedback.

      Thank you.

  4. Hey Coralie,

Really interesting to know that this kind of equipment, is available in the market.  I was not aware that treadmill for dogs are available, what a great way to make your pet exercise if it is not possible for you to walk your boy for a walk.

It could be very helpful with dogs having behavior problems and I think profession treadmills, specifically meant for dogs is an excellent option to burn that excess energy off.

Just curious about how to train your dog to use a treadmill, is there any dog treadmill training program?  I find some Sport Dog Treadmills online, are they differ from these treadmills?

    • Hi Shubhangi,

I appreciate your comments on my post, so thank you.

To answer you question about getting your dog to walk on a treadmill, we didn’t use any training material for our dogs. We just put them on at a very low setting with a leash and stood in the front of the treadmill pulling just a bit. Of course lots of encouragement as they go and you can slowly up the speed.

It was really quite easy to get them used to it.  I think they really enjoy the exercise, so they associate it with fun and praise.

I agree that dogs that have tons of energy or behaviour problems, can really find this product super helpful.

      Thank you.

  5. I keep getting great reviews for Dog Pacer but their customer service is not the best! I have two GSDs and like the 720 model but can’t find s way to purchase except from Amazon. Can you connect to the company or know a venue to purchase this product?

    • Hi Gwendolyn,
