What Are The Smallest Dogs

When it comes to picking a new puppy or dog, there are tons of people that prefer to choose a smaller dog breed. There are lots of reasons that getting a smaller dog just works better for people.  We all know that the bigger the dog, sometimes means the bigger the mess. HAHA! No not really, but the convenience and ease of having a smaller dog is real and makes total sense.  The tough part comes at decision time when actually choosing a small dog.  Many of us don’t even know where to start.  What are the smallest dogs that are most common?

Obviously there is a huge list of small dog breeds available to choose from, but picking the right one for you and your family is a special decision.  Every family and situation is unique.  I always believe that learning and knowledge before I make any decision is a good thing. It certainly can’t hurt right.

Let’s go through a list of 6 of the most popular small dogs that people love.

Did you know that the Chihuahua is actually the smallest dog breed?  Yup, it is!  That fact alone, makes it one of the most popular small dogs around.  They are a very well-known, I would say almost famous dog breed.  Whether is due to the fame of “Gidget” the Taco Bell dog, or “Ren” from the Ren and Stimpy show, the Chihuahua is a super popular small dog choice.

Height: 5-8 inches

Weight: 6 lbs and under

Life Expectancy: 14-16 yrs

Hair: Long or short haired (non-shedding)

Characteristics: loyal, charming, and big dog personality

The small size and low weight of these dogs, makes them an easy choice for first time dog parents that are looking for a dog they can take with them wherever they go.  Not a dog that is meant to rough house with kids, or be out in the cold, neither of these are good for Chihuahuas.

Some Chihuahuas are prone to being overweight as they age, so feeding them a healthy dog food is important.  Like all breeds of dog, they require training and discipline.  Just because they are small, doesn’t mean they don’t need training.  They are a very strong and loyal breed.

Mini Dachshund

Most often referred to as the “weiner dog”, the Dachshund is a member of the hound family.  These scent hound are great for hunting ground animals like rabbits.  As a house dog they are well-loved and super popular.  Dachshund parents seems to always have that extra bit of love for this breed and are not afraid to show it.  This breed has a very loyal following and this of course puts them on this list.

The Mini Dachshund is a very well-known breed, mostly because of their unique look.  Everybody knows what a weiner dog looks like and about their very feisty character.  Guaranteed to give you all the love you can handle but still give you almost more than you can handle. HAHA!

Bursting with confidence, this breed makes a wonderful family dog.  Just looking at them, makes you smile. Dachshund love food and this is one breed that can have serious health issues if they become overweight.  They are at risk of having back issues, simply because of their stature.  For this reason, keeping them fit and healthy will help keep them moving and giving them the best chance to live a long life.

Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is one of the top choices when it comes to small dogs.  This breed is very often a breed that people continue to get over and over. A small breed that is know to be always up on high comfy spots on a couch or chair. Very high class demeanor. LOL!

When it comes to choosing one of the best dog breeds for families with kids, then Shih Tzu is an excellent choice.  They are amazing with kids and love to shower them with kisses.

There long flowing locks and top hair knot makes them that almost regal looking dog.

If you are looking for the perfect companion and lap warmer then this is the choice for you.

Yorkshire Terrier

This breed usually referenced as “Yorkie”, is a very small and adorable breed.  The Yorkie is the most popular small toy breed in the U.S.  Toy meaning very small dog breed.  Considered to be a very dainty dog to look at, but yet inside is their inner big dog.  Small but mighty definitely is the best way to describe this breed.

Height: 7-8 inches

Weight: 7 lbs

Life Expectancy: 11-15 yrs

Hair: silky long hair (can shed a little)

Characteristics: devoted, elegant and loving

This compact yet bossy small dog, packs a huge punch with their personality.  Very feisty and brave but still extremely lovable.  They make a great companion and family member for any family.

At times their true terrier personality comes out towards strangers and may result in them excessive barking.  This is something that you would need to work on early in training and following it up with good discipline.

They are a breed that need lots of attention and time, so when considering this breed, remember that small doesn’t mean no work.  A dog no matter the size still needs to be taken care of.

King Charles Spaniel

The regal looking King Charles Spaniel, is often thought of as one of the very graceful almost like an aristocrat of the small breeds.  It is very common that this breed has their tail wagging on a regular basis and are considered to be an athletic dog.  They love to be out walking or hiking, as long as they are by your side.

Weight: 13-18 lbs

Life Expectancy: 12-15 yrs

Hair: silky long hair (can shed)

Characteristics: gentle, sweet and athletic

Their intelligent sweet face and beautiful round eyes, will absolutely melt your heart.  One of the best things about this breed is that whether your out walking of hanging on the couch, they are just happy to be beside you.  Even so much that they are like your shadow.  Such a soft and sweet personality.

They are masters of getting you to pet them constantly while they gaze into your eyes.  Sometimes to the point that they are given anything they want.  This can leave them at risk of becoming overweight, from over eating.  Giving them a healthy diet and the right amount of exercise to ensure they stay fit.

The Pomeranian appearance is much like the look of a fox.  There face is small and petite, while their body is filled with fluffy long hair.  Cute and adorable dogs, that are very loyal and yet very cocky.  Thought of as easy to train and teach tricks to, these characteristics make them a solid choice in a small dog.

Height: 6-7 inches

Weight: 3-7 lbs

Life Expectancy: 12-16 yrs

Hair: double coated long hair (will shed)

Characteristics: intelligent, loyal and active

The cocky character of this breed, can at times be a bit hard to handle.  They have even been seen attacking much larger dogs.  The small stature does not cause this dog to shy away from a confrontation.

Perfect for a family with children that are old enough to know how to treat a dog.  Small children may not be the best situation for this breed as their tiny size can be easily injured accidentally.  Older people are a great fit for this breed.

This small breed needs consistent training and strong discipline, because they can easily take over as pack leader if not.

Great addition to the family

If you are looking for a new addition to your family, checking out a small dog breed is a wonderful idea.   A small dog is defined as any dog weighing less then 22 lbs and standing no taller than 16 inches.

Small dogs are nice to have around simply because they are small.   It is very easy to include them in almost every family event that takes place.   One other major benefit to having a small dog, is the ability to teach children how to look after and be responsible for a dog.  The small stature of the dog makes them easier for children to be able to handle.

What are the smallest dogs that people like? Well my run through of 6 of the most popular small dogs is a good start if you are thinking of adding a new dog to your family.  There are many other wonderful small dogs to choose from, so as always make sure that you do your homework before just jumping in.  All dogs are wonderful, but not every dog is a good fit for you.

    • Hi Sophia,

I find it so funny that so many small dog breeds have big dog personalities.  It’s like they don’t even know they are small. LOL!

I had a cockatoo for 15 years named BOO and he was sweet and cuddly. Still though was the dominate dog to my Labradoodle. Funny to see a small dog bossing around a dog way bigger then him.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on my post.

  2. Wow! I didn’t know a lot of this info about little dogs. We always had small dogs growing up, mainly chihuahuas. They are hard to train, so needs a human who can set limits and brick with them.

    • Hi Linda,

Yes chihuahua’s are small but mighty for sure. The only small dog I ever had was a Cockapoo and we was very stubborn. Adorable and sweet, but a bit of a force. LOL!
I loved the ability to just pick him up and carry him with us. We currently have a Labradoodle that is a bit of a big boy! I think no matter what breed of dog we choose, they are adorable characters.
Thank you for taking the time to read and share your thoughts on my post. I appreciate it.

  3. Loved reading this post. I’m not very good at recognizing dogs, I’m more of a cat person but if I ever had to choose, I would go for Dachshund
